How it works

When you request a hire, choose RPP as an add-on at the time of booking.

Pay the RPP fee (15% + GST of hire charges).

If during the hire period the equipment is accidentally damaged or stolen:

  • You report the event (file police report if required), submit evidence within 5 business days.
  • You pay the RPP Excess (the capped amount) as defined for the item. United Rentals handles the rest.
  • Your liability stays capped, even if replacement or repair costs are much higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Rental Protection Plan (RPP)?

RPP is an optional damage‑waiver program you can add when you hire equipment from United Rentals Australia. Instead of being fully liable for loss, theft or damage to the equipment, you pay a small fee and your maximum financial responsibility is limited to a defined “excess.” It is not insurance, but a contractual waiver of certain liabilities under the hire agreement.

How much does RPP cost?

The RPP fee is calculated as a percentage of the hire charges.

What is my excess / liability if I use RPP?

If damage or theft occurs, your liability under RPP will be limited to a capped amount — typically the lesser of a fixed excess per item or a percentage of repair / replacement costs.

What does RPP cover?
  1. Loss, theft or accidental damage to hired equipment during the hire period (including while in transit) subject to terms.
  2. Replacement or repair costs up to defined limits under the waiver.
What is not covered by RPP?
  1. Damage to tyres or tubes caused by punctures, blowouts, cuts, bursts or typical wear & tear.
  2. Loss or damage resulting from intentional misuse, negligence, abuse, or failure to comply with hire‑agreement terms.
  3. Damage to items or accessories for which the RPP fee was not paid or is inapplicable.
When do I need to opt in to RPP?

RPP must be accepted at the time you enter into the Rental and Service Agreement — it cannot be added retro‑actively.

What if I damage or lose the equipment, what’s the process?

If you want to make a claim under RPP:

  1. Notify United Rentals Australia immediately (or as soon as practicable) about the loss, damage or theft.
  2. Provide any required documentation (for example, if theft: a police report or crime number, where relevant).
  3. Submit full details of the incident and cooperate with any investigation or inspection if required.
Are there different terms for passenger‑vehicle hire vs equipment hire?

Yes. For example: with some vehicle hires, RPP may limit liability differently (certain thresholds or conditions may apply).

Is RPP a substitute for public liability or other types of insurance?

No. RPP only waives or limits liability for loss, theft or damage to the hired equipment itself. It does not cover third‑party liability, personal injury, property damage outside the hired item, or any other form of insurance that may be required under law or contract.

What if I already have my own equipment‑insurance policy?

If your existing insurance policy covers the full replacement value of hired equipment for the duration of the hire and meets the insurance obligations per rental agreement, you may decline RPP. But you must provide proof of that policy if requested.
